AND THE MARIE ANTOINETTE AWARD FOR 2018 GOES TO...

In his 1980 book entitled You Are What You Wear, author William Thourlby redefined both casual and  business wear; for example, how to maintain respect and authority when one "dresses down." In her 2012 book, similarly titled You Are What You Wear: What Your Clothes Reveal About You, author Jennifer Baumgartner focuses on the link between one's internal and one's external self as expressed on the clothes one wears. What one wears tells people a lot about themself before they even open their mouth to speak. Research shows that more than 80% of what someone remembers about an encounter is related to non-verbal communication, a large part of that being one's overall appearance (their clothes) and their demeanor.

Behold First Lady Melania Trump on her "surprise" trip to Texas to see for herself the plight of undocumented immigrant children. The jacket she chose to wear was a $38.00 Zara jacket with a graffiti scrawl on the back (it came with the jacket) reading, ""I really don't care. Do U?" The jacket, a mock military field, immediately drew the attention of observers, and begged the question, "Is she out of her F**king mind?" She is a former fashion model and one might surmise that she knows exactly what she is wearing...and why. Certainly the words on her coat do  not reflect any semblance of compassion that one might expect from the First Lady on a "mission of compassion." The first lady's communications director, Stephanie Grisham, claimed that "there was no hidden message" behind the graffiti. Hard to believe! Could the message have been meant for the press? Well, her husband, "He who must not be named" tweeted, “I REALLY DON’T CARE, DO U?” written on the back of Melania’s jacket, refers to the Fake News Media. Melania has learned how dishonest they are, and she truly no longer cares!"

Several questions come to mind. Was Melania Trump oblivious to the message her jacket sent? Is she really as stupid and empty-headed as many people perceive her to be? Or, is the sentiment expressed indicative of her true feelings? Psychological research would indicate that it is the latter with an 80+% certainty. Recall, she wore the jacket going to her plane in Washington, doffed it for her official "surprise" visit, and then after it was done, put the jacket back on, leading one to conclude that she was well aware of the message of the jacket.

"Qu'ils mangent de la brioche", "Let them eat cake," those famous words attributed to the Queen of France, when she learned that the peasants had no bread c. 1792. A word of caution to to Mrs. Trump. La belle Marie Antoinette allegedly uttered those words at a time when France was in need of help and compassion, just as the immigrant child-prisoners need help and compassion. In 1793 most of Marie was separated from her head. Need I say more?
